Nemi: Vol 4
Everyone knows what the best bit of the Metro is. You either savour it, waiting until you have read all the news articles or head straight to it. And no, I’m not talking about the sports section. Nemi. The twenty something geeky goth with a passion for wearing black and discussing the absurdities of daily life. Three or four panels of daily hilarity and joy. A superstar in Europe, and read by 1.35 million readers in Metro every day, Nemi. Along with her trusty friend Cyan, she faces the trials and tribulations of chocolate addiction, movie geekdom and trying very hard not to grow up as her peers trend towards marriage and children.
This is the fourth collection of Nemi from Norwegian cartoonist Lise Myhre. Packed full of Nemi strips but also full page artwork it’s a lovely collection of the comic. Unlike reading daily snippets which perhaps do not follow on, we can see a full year of Nemi life here. There is a nice story arc regarding Cyan splitting up with her longterm boyfriend and Nemi’s solutions to the problem. Nemi’s procrastination techniques, refusal to grow up and tendency to play as many video games as possible are a happy contrast to the ideal image of the 21st century woman. There is a piece of Nemi in all of us, perhaps many pieces in some cases and its refreshing to read that somewhere out there someone else feels the same.
Between Nemi’s drunken antics and Cyan’s sleep talking, the duo make quite the irresistible pair. This book guarantees a smirk on every page and a laugh at least every two. Nemi Montoya is a truly unique character and makes no qualms of being a huge geek. With fans including Roman Dirge and Tori Amos and an introduction from former Adverts bass guitarist, Gaye Advert, Nemi is a huge star and this collection deserves to be read by everyone who has ever felt a little different. A perfect stocking filler.
